Fake marriages between Japanese, foreigners jumps by 49.2%

The National Police Agency said in a report this week that between January and June of this year, the number of sham marriages exposed by police was 88—an increase of 49.2% over last year.

The number of exposed individuals, including marriage brokers, was 264, the NPA report said. Of the total, 144 held Japanese citizenship. Of the 120 foreigners, 85 were Chinese. The next highest group were 23 Filipinos.

The NPA said it is planning a campaign to intensify efforts to expose sham marriages, falsification of passports and procedures for obtaining foreign registration cards, as well as underground banking.
